Emerging composer and improviser Joshua Hahn has been presented by Boston Musica Viva, Juventas, Transient Canvas, Symphony Nova, Antico Moderno, Da Camera of Houston, Nonevent, and more. His solo guitar piece, Lullaby, was awarded first prize for solo string composition by Massachusetts String Teachers Association in 2015. Joshua is inspired by the unique sound and capabilities of each instrument and ensemble. He relishes the thought-provoking, often unexpected results of reaching a musical solution for every instrumentation. He pursues interdisciplinary collaborations to enhance the experiential quality of live music, most recently in a collaboration between Symphony Nova and Boston Circus Guild.
Joshua’s work is inspired and supported by a broad array of experiences. As the Development Manager of Breakthrough Greater Boston, he writes grants and crafts communications in support of Breakthrough’s mission to create paths to college for low-income students of color. Josh is the former General Manger of Symphony Nova, an orchestra and professional development program for recently graduate musicians. He volunteers for Castle of Our Skins, a new music ensemble dedicated to celebrating black artistry, and plays flute in the Dubois Orchestra, an orchestra that performs the work of black composers.
Joshua holds an MM in composition from Rice University and a BA summa cum laude in music from Tufts University. His teachers have included Shih-hui Chen, Anthony Brandt, and John McDonald.
