composer, improviser and flutist
Joshua Hahn has been presented as a composer by Boston Musica Viva, Juventas, Transient Canvas, and Antico Moderno, and as a composer-flutist by Da Camera of Houston, Nonevent, Foundation for Modern Music, and more. Josh has also been the recipient of several awards and commissions. In 2024, he was selected by the Virginia Music Teachers Association for the Virginia commissioned composer, with a premiere at the annual conference at Virginia State University. His solo guitar piece, Lullaby, was awarded first prize for solo string composition by Massachusetts String Teachers Association in 2015.
Josh is also committed to cultural equity and volunteerism. He has served on the board of Castle of Our Skins, an ensemble dedicated to celebrating Black artistry, since 2018. He serves on the advisory board of Music Orchard Richmond, which provides after-school and in-school music lessons to students who would not otherwise have access to them.
Josh plays modern and historical flutes, and his collection includes a baroque flute and a 19th-century 8-key flute. He plays regularly with RVA Baroque and with members of Classical Revolution RVA. He is also skilled as a charanga flutist and an Arabic nay player.
Joshua received an MM in composition from Rice University and a BA summa cum laude in music from Tufts University. His teachers have included Shih-hui Chen, Anthony Brandt, and John McDonald. His music theory scholarship has been published by Music Theory Online, a journal of the Society for Music Theory. He has also presented his music theory scholarship at the Theorizing African American Music Conference.
